Collaboration and role in networks

Our expert and research work are based on networking and co-production. SYKE works in numerous domestic and international networks together with decision-makers, companies, research institutions and universities, local authorities, NGOS, and citizens.

One of SYKE's most important pilot networks is the HINKU network of municipalities striving for carbon neutrality. The goal is to achieve an 80 percent reduction in emissions in municipalities by 2030. About a third of Finns are already affected by the network. Operations have also expanded to large cities and now Hinku provinces have been launched. The CANEMURE Life IP project builds on the HINKU network and similar municipality collaboration is built in CIRCWASTE and a newlystarting Nature Munipalities network.

Other significant co-operation networks include, for example, the River Basin Rehabilitation Network and the FISU (Finnish Sustainable Communities) network of pioneer communities of resource wisdom. SYKE has also a long-term business cooperation that has guided companies to support biodiversity.

SYKE has several international networks in which we play a key role. The EURAQUA Network is currently chred by SYKE, and SYKE has been a founding member in the Europe’s ecosystem research network ALTER-Net. The Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER) is SYKE’s key European Research network.

SYKE participates also in several European Environmental Agency (EEA) work through European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET) and several Topic Centres. SYKE is currently involved in the preparation of EU guidelines through research and development projects and the co-operation network of European Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA-Network).

SYKE has been proactive e.g. reforming the monitoring of the state of the environment, promoting the circular economy, ensuring the sustainable use of water and marine areas, promoting ecosystem services and nature-based solutions, and urbanization issues.

Our large cooperation networks enable the flexible utilization of know-how and resources, as well as the innovative development of new reviews and solutions. SYKE has strengthened its capabilities through research projects and recruitment, as well as by expanding its cooperation networks. Co-authored publications illustrates SYKE’s successful past collaboration, while our current collaborative project portfolio is a snapshot of existing functioning collaboration.
