Website and social media

SYKE's online presence is high and it attracts more visitors all the time. Online services have been developed on a long-term basis and their user numbers have become significant. Likewise, the number of social media followers has grown rapidly. SYKE´s social media accounts have the role of informing and marketing. From the point of view of influence, however, it is particularly significant that SYKE has researchers and experts whose social media followers represent a wide range of different actors in society. SYKE researchers engage in active discussions with journalists, entrepreneurs, municipal decision-makers, citizens and politicians. Many media stories are generated thanks to researchers' Twitter discussions.

Websites

SYKE launched the first online web pages soon after its establishment as part of environmental administration. This environment.fi service is still the main and most extensive Finnish public administration environmental portal, the number of followers of which has been constantly growing. Last year these pages have been downloaded 3.3 million times. Based on user feedback, the service is considered reliable and important source of information, a kind of databank for experts, authorities, decision makers, businesses and citizens. The renewal of the service has started this year. SYKE is responsible for coordinating and developing the service.

SYKE's own webservice www.syke.fi, on the other hand, is an organizational website that provides basic information about SYKE's operations, services and experts, as well as latest news. It also provides information about SYKE's expertise, offering SYKE's scientific publications for use and presenting our world class researchers.

In the 2010s, digital communication has expanded further. SYKE has published several thematic sites for different target groups. They are typically services that are produced with partners outside of environmental administration. They are thus broader in perspective, or they can be campaign-type or tailored for certain target groups. Such services are, for example, climateguide.fi and carbonneutralfinland.fi. In 2020, two extensive portals MarineFinland.fi and water.fi were also launched. They have already acquired thousands of followers.

Social Media

SYKE has increased its organization-level presence in social media step by step. In the first phase SYKE launched Facebook account targeted to the general public and a bit later a Twitter account aimed at interaction both with professionals and interested citizens. Other services include a LinkedIn profile presenting SYKE´s organization, a YouTube channel that compiles SYKE´s videos, SYKE´s Solutions blog and, most recently, an Instagram account updated by SYKE´s researchers. The number of followers of all services is growing year by year. However, despite organizational accounts, the most significant impact is generated through researchers´ and management´s own social media accounts.
