During 2023 the Finnish national research vessel Aranda opens doors to the public in its home town Helsinki, Finland, and in three coastal cities: Klaipeda in Lithuania, Liepaja in Latvia, and Tallinn in Estonia. The Events are organized by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) together with several BALTICITIES-project partners. The Open Doors are combined by locally designed community programs in each city by representatives of city municipalities, their harbor authorities, NGOs, research institutes, universities, museums and students.
The overarching goal is to attract local citizens to the R/V Aranda and inform them about the Baltic marine environment. On board, visitors will hear from scientists describing the state of the sea, environmental threats, and how marine research is carried out. Marine scientists and local actors will also provide practical advice on how citizens can contribute to pro-sea actions.
