Current issues of GreeningCities project

Urban greening plan workshops

The 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy and recently the Restoration Law have set greening targets for municipalities and cities to support and preserve biodiversity. The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and Eurocities are organizing a workshop series for municipal operators to learn about these objectives, share information and experience on how the goals can be promoted in municipalities and the challenges associated with this.

Towards greener future - workshop for municipalities (Kohti vihreämpää tulevaisuutta - kuntatilaisuus)

The first, "Kohti vihreämpää tulevaisuutta" workshop was organized 30.8.2022 by SYKE and was targeted to Finnish municipalities. During this event, SKYE presented the draft European Urban Greening Plan (UGP) guidelines so that municipalities could get acquainted and provide feedback. To assist with greening plans setting and monitoring, various stakeholders and experts were discussing main challenges that are hindering the implementation of greening plans. Outputs from the discussions will be reviewed, refined, and used as input to the second workshop. Workshop presentations can be found from the Finnish project page.

Gearing up towards Urban Greening Plans - workshop for the European cities

The second workshop, Gearing up towards Urban Greening plans - Discussion on greening and biodiversity indicators, was organized by SYKE and Eurocities and held on Tuesday 20 September 2022. Second event focused on selecting indicators to establish the baseline values and the expected results from the development of Urban Greening Plans. Lessons learned during the first workshop were also presented and reviewed to highlight new opportunities and limitations.

Gearing up towards Urban Greening Plans - science meet practise (ESP conference)

The third and final workshop was organized during the Ecosystem Services Conference (ESP) in Heraklion (Greece) from October 10 to 14, 2022. This last workshop considered specific case studies of successful implementation of greening plans. It also provided the opportunity to bridge the gap between science and practice through a discussion forum.
