Our society is facing environmental problems of increasing complexity, such as climate change, urbanisation and global challenges related to sustainable development. In order to resolve these burning issues, we need to generate reliable environmental information.
The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) supports environmental policies by providing solutions ranging from collecting environmental information to decision-making. We help policy-makers to recognise the value of environmental information and support the use of predictive environmental information.
We are developing new environmental information methods. We will use advanced and effective methods such as deep learning, complex optimisation and artificial intelligence to enable the faster utilisation of information. We also support the enhanced use of information produced by citizens.
We work in close cooperation with research institutions, companies and ministries. We are actively involved in national and international networks.
Focal points
- Applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to monitoring and decision-making
- Further development of data fusion methods
- Advanced utilisation of remote sensing data
- Use of unstructured data resources
- Accounting for the revision needs and quality requirements of international environmental organisations (the EU, EEA)
- The significance of technical developments in citizen-based monitoring and data collection to citizens’ participation in policy-making
