  • Earth observation applications for climate change adaptation and mitigation 2021-09-30
    Climate change adaptation and mitigation are to be studied with the help of data and Artificial Intelligence in a new international research project. Launched in June 2021, EIFFEL will introduce new methods to the field of climate research by harvesting the benefits of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Finnish Environment Institute SYKE is one of the 19 partners contributing to the project.

    The report on the Physical Science Basis of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, published on Monday states that human-induced climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe. This will affect life on land, at sea and in the atmosphere. To combat climate change, we need rapid and comprehensive and system-level actions that reduce emissions, enhance carbon sinks and help us adapt to changes.
  • New project creates tools for monitoring the Arctic and adapting to the changing environment 2021-06-30
    The European Union will provide 15 million euros from the Horizon 2020 Programme to fund the Arctic PASSION project for the period 2021 to 2025. A consortium of 35 partners will promote the integration of international environmental observing systems for the Arctic and improve the tailoring of these systems to the needs of various user groups ranging from local inhabitants to academia through to industry and decision-makers.
