Just transition: Tackling inequalities on the way to a sustainable, healthy and climate-neutral food system (JUST-FOOD)

Just food: Sustainable, climate-smart and just food system

JUST FOOD explores and develops means for making the transition to a healthy and climate-smart food system just, sustainable, and socially acceptable. The existing sustainability transition research has focused on examining the means, not social impacts, of transitions. This creates a risk that the food system transition solves some problems but creates many others, such as social inequalities, health disparities, and outsourced environmental harms.

Just food project conceptualises and operationalises just transition and supports policy making by generating knowledge about the conditions of a just transition and tools for evaluating and fostering it. The transdisciplinary research project combines theoretical food justice scholarship with environmental research, economics, and social and nutrition sciences. Just food project brings the ethical aspects in the forefront of food system and transformation studies. It engages stakeholders in the knowledge co-creation and practical case studies that foster just transition.

The cross-disciplinary research project JUST FOOD is managed by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) together with University of Jyväskylä (JyU), Natural Resource Institute (Luke), National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL), e2 Research and the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern, Switzerland.

During this project we will publish newsletters, blogs, policy briefs, publications and a podcast series. We will also organize events and webinars. For more information go to our website: www.justfood.fi/en. You may find us on Twitter too.
