Forecasting services for hydrologically exceptional water situations

Would automatic flood and drought warnings for lakes and rivers and warnings about snow load risk on large roof structures help your capability to adapt to hazardous unexpected weather situations?

Finnish Environment Institute SYKE has developed a comprehensive watershed model, WSFS-VEMALA, to simulate and forecast hydrological variables such as the water levels and discharges of lakes and rivers, ground water levels and the snow water equivalent. The system has also been developed to provide nutrient load simulation from land areas to the Baltic Sea.

The WSFS model has been applied in Latvia.

The WSF-VEMALA model includes two main sub-models, the WSFS hydrological model and the VEMALA water quality model. The VEMALA model simulates nutrient gross load, retention and net load from watersheds on the national scale. The VEMALA model is used operationally.
