Project Description
General studies in the Mediterranean Environmental Technical Assistance Programme (METAP) have demonstrated that environmental degradation can cause significant economic losses. This project focusing on the Cost of Environmental Degradation in coastal areas studied the situation in specific pilot areas in four METAP countries. The objective of the project was to:
- Strengthen the capacity to assess the cost of environmental degradation in coastal areas;
- Demonstrate how costs of environmental degradation accumulate in particular regions;
- Provide an analytical framework that can be applied in the context of integrated coastal zone management in METAP countries.
The project strengthened the capacity of the selected METAP countries to deal with the most urgent issues related to integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), including strengthening the capacity to analyze costs of environmental degradation and economic effects of remediation measures to be applied in ICZM.
The prepared training material supports the implementation of METAP strategy, assessment of COED and environmental management of coastal areas. The analytical framework as well as the training manual were developed in such a way that makes it possible to customize them into local conditions in project countries.
