Egyptian Pollution Abatement Project (EPAP)

Project Description

The project aimed at setting up adequate mechanisms and resources to curb industrial pollution. The best use of available World Bank and European Investment Bank pollution abatement investment funds were also sought. The project incorporated sub-components for industrial environmental auditing, industrial pollution abatement action plans, regional government organisations development, awareness raising, NGO and media support, the development of banking procedures and the development of an environmental database.

Services provided by SYKE

SYKE had the main responsibility over the following project components:

  • strengthening of administrative organisations (three regional branch offices of the Egyptian Environment Affairs Agency and the environmental management units of four governorates) and their procedures;
  • elaboration of general and sector specific inspection and self-monitoring manuals and mobilisation & enforcement training;
  • emission inventory of Alexandria and Suez Governorates; 
  • institutional support to environmental NGOs to participate in the Egyptian Pollution Abatement Project (EPAP);
  • promotion of public awareness on industrial environmental issues through media and information campaigns;
  • development of pollution abatement information databases.
