Baltic Oil Spill Safety System, Russia

Project Description

The aim of the Baltic Oil Spill Safety System Project was to help Russian authorities in improving the environmental monitoring of oil spills and in developing a Baltic global oil spill response system. The project enhanced international cooperation on the prevention and combating of oil spills within the Baltic Sea and facilitated an early reaction to ecological emergencies, through the design of an information and reaction system to minimise environmental damage in case of operations or accidents involving the transportation of oil or other hazardous bulk chemicals.  Components of the project included:

  • a feasibility study for a Joint Co-ordination and Information Centre;
  • the development of rescue, control and management strategies for oil spill accidents in the Baltic Sea;
  • the preparation of joint rules and procedures for a unified system of monitoring and oil spill combat at Russian ports; and
  • the development of recommendations on upgrading oil spill response and monitoring equipment.
